Examples

The information contained in the bios has been gathered from birth, marriage and death notices, articles and obituaries from early newspapers. To view the list of the newspapers used go to Sources.

To see an example of a bio sheet, how it is set out, and the kind of information it contains see the examples below. Some bio sheets contain a lot of information others only a small amount depending on how often someone's name appeared in the newspapers.

Child

The bio sheets for children who did not reach adulthood usually only consist of a death notice, date of death, often their father's name and sometimes their date of birth and the first name of their mother. Example

Woman

A bio for a woman usually only has a record of her marriage, which contained the name of her husband and her father. Occasionally death notices and obituaries did record a woman's maiden name. Where possible bio sheets are recorded under a woman's maiden name Example but if it is unknown then her married name is used. Example

Man

Bios for men often contain the most information as they were more likely to have an obituary. Birth notices for children usually only had the father's name in them so have been included in their father's bio sheet. Wives were sometimes acknowledged only as the wife or daughter of a man. Example

Assumptions

The bios sheets have been compiled under the following assumptions:

  • Names beginning with M' have been changed to Mc - because people are more likely to search for Mc.
  • That a person with same name and same address are the same person.
  • That a person with same initials and same address are the same person.
  • That a person with same initials as the first names of a person at the same address is the same person.
  • That a person with same initials or same name and with a wife of same name living at a different address at a later date may be the same person.
  • When children are born after the death of a spouse (and where it is not stated that the deceased spouse is the parent) then it is assumed there is another spouse.
  • That brothers and sisters have the same parents (unless it is stated otherwise).
  • That the surname of a man's father-in-law or the married name of his mother-in-law is the maiden name of his wife (unless it is stated otherwise).
  • That the address of the father is the previous residence of his adult children.
